Los Frikis is a vibrant exploration of punk and resistance in 90s Cuba
Five years after Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz debuted their sleeper hit The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019), the directing duo’s sophomore feature Los Frikis continues their interest in empathetic stories at the intersection of misunderstood subcultures and the systems that try to hold them down. In this case, Los Frikis draws from Cuba’s “special period,” defined by the early 90s economic collapse that occurred when key food and petroleum imports ceased as a result of the Soviet Union’s dissolution.
